About

Christian Holmqvist (b. 1974, Helsinki) is a Finnish composer. He studied composition 

(1992-1995) under the guidance of Lars Karlsson, composer and teacher at the Sibelius-Academy. As part of his studies in musicology at the University of Helsinki (1993-2002) he participated in seminars in composition and orchestration held by composer Harri Vuori. 

Holmqvist has composed works commissioned by, for example, The Helsinki Symphonic Winds, the horn player Tero Toivonen and the saxophonist Olli-Pekka Tuomisalo. His works have been performed by the chamber orchestra Avanti!, The St. Michel Strings, The Kuopio City Orchestra and The Guards Band under the baton of Sasha Mäkilä, Atso Almila, and others. Outstanding Finnish musicians  such as the pianists Risto-Matti Marin, Johan von Schantz and Eeva Tapanen, the mezzo soprano Marika Kivinen, the accordionist Matti Pulkki, the guitarist Jonne Grans, and members of the AND Ensemble (violinists Annemarie Åström and Paula Nykänen, violist Tiila Kangas and cellist Tomas Nuñez-Garcés), have performed his music. 

Holmqvist is active as a music writer and participates in Finnish TV- and radio broadcasts as a commentator on classical music. He has published musicological articles and reviews. He has worked as a teacher of music theory at the Åbo Akademi University and as a lecturer.
